Sexual Health & Well-being Among Sex Working Men in the Atlantic Provinces
This 5-year CIHR-funded study is informed by our previous work, where men sex workers we interviewed reported a profound lack of resources and community spaces/events tailored to them in the Atlantic provinces. This project aims to prevent STBBIs and improve sexual health and well-being among sex working men (SWM) by increasing their access to resources, building community capacity, and facilitating gatherings and networking events.
This multi-site study encompasses all of Atlantic Canada, with partnering Community Based Organizations (CBOs) and collaborators located in several small urban and rural centres throughout Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland & Labrador.
Our research objectives are:
1) conduct life history interviews with SWM throughout the region;
2) develop, evaluate, refine, and disseminate a resource guide for men sex workers tailored to Atlantic Canada and a series of training modules to grow CBO capacity to support SWM; 3) establish a mutual aid network for SWM to employ towards self-determined goals; and
4) hold community-building events in each province to bring SWM together for social, artistic, and political expression and public engagement.
Research activities and outcomes will be evaluated using a suite of tools guided by a queer evaluation framework.
